HAVE YOUR SAY.

As we advised, Safework NSW have released the final revised Code of Practice for formwork, (with changes made to the old 1998 code) and the FIA have requested your feedback.

It is extremely important that the industry come together to provide the final feedback on the code. We do not need to remind you that this code will affect ALL formwork contractors and construction companies.

A number of FIA members have read the revised code and provided us with their feedback and there is also agreement that we should hold a meeting to discuss this feedback in more detail. This feedback will then be collated and sent to SafeWork NSW for further review.

Failing to do nothing and not provide feedback will affect your business. The industry needs to take this final opportunity to re-write the code and provide clarity for everyone to improve the safety of Formwork in Australia. The revised code of practice for NSW is just the start.

Please register for this event and send your senior team to discuss the revised code - is it adequate enough? Does it provide clarity for you and your workers?

Areas of concern raised already include:

  • 'Planning formwork & falsework' - particularly clauses 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.10, 7.16 and 7.19. Clarity around additional design responsibilities for Formwork PCBU's and independent engineers. What are the current implications for your business? Is there clarity that builders can follow and ask of you? Is there enough clarity around minor and major deck modifications and when inspection is required?
  • Falls - particularly clauses 6.1, 6.4 and 6.5. A major hot topic at present with a number of investigations currently happening and likely prosecutions. Does the new code provide clarity on penetration protection & fall protection from the formwork deck? Do you have clarity on the right guardrails, handrails and penetration covers to use?
  • Erecting, altering & dismantling formwork and falsework - clause 7 and particularly 7.4 and 7.5 where compliance shall be mandatory. Do you have enough clarity on erecting formwork frames, particularly temporary work platforms, catch decks and intermediate decks?
  • Is the code easy to follow and understand and is all imagery adequate?
